I have been very active in research. I have been persistently introducing state-of-the-art molecular technologies and instruments to the Science Faculty and CUHK since my joining the University. I consider myself one of the main promoters of molecular biology in CUHK.
Research
My research interests are diverse and always incorporate the most recent and important research development. For example,
- I have obtained, as principle investigator or co-investigator, over HK$132 million of external competitive research funding (HK$54m as PI and HK$78m as Co-I).
- My group was the first group in Hong Kong to perform polymerase chain reaction (1988), to sequence DNA manually (1986) and with automated sequencer (1997), to authenticate Chinese medicinal materials with molecular tools (1991), to sequence genomes with the Next Generation Sequencer (2008), and to use NGS to characterize microbiota form the environment and human body.
- I acquired the first genome sequencer and set up the first genome sequencing service in Hong Kong.
- I have ample experience in collaborating with faculty members in many disciplines. My collaborators include people in our university, from Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Chinese Medicine, Mathematics, Statistics, and Medicine.
- My laboratory is the world-leading laboratory in Shiitake mushroom Lentinula edodes genetics and genomics. I am also part of a consortium working on genomics of the model mushroom Coprinopsis cinerea.
- I am also part of a consortium working on pathogen genomics, especially foodborne pathogens and tuberculosis bacteria.
- I have been a core member of the consortium on functional genomics of C. cinerea, supported by Community Science Program 2012 of Joint Genome Institute, Department of Energy, USA.
- I have been a team member in many important projects including the Area of Excellence “Plant and Fungal Biotechnology”.
- I have led several substantial research projects including “Construction of Food Composition Database for Nutritional Labelling”, a project funded with HK$17.7 million by the Jockey Club Charity Funds. The project aims to benefit many small and medium enterprises in the Hong Kong food industry. Another project is “First-Stage Development of a Comprehensive Genome Sequence Database for the Identification of Foodborne Pathogens in Hong Kong”, a project supported with HK$6.1 million by the Research Fund for Control of Infectious Diseases, Food and Health Bureau. I have also leading the food authentication effort in Hong Kong with a HK$3 million fund from Innovation and Technology Commission: “First-stage development of platform for authentication of dried seafood and tonic food products”. In the past years, I have led the Science Faculty to collaborate with other faculties within CUHK, with other universities in Hong Kong and in mainland China, as well as government departments in Hong Kong. I understand and recognize good scientific research and at the same time realize the demands of the society on applied scientific research. Especially worth mentioning is my laboratory has developed into a powerhouse of bioinformatics. We are now capable of performing world class analysis on genomics and metagenomics.
These research experiences allow me to
- understand and appreciate good research in many science disciplines,
- promote collaborative research among faculty members from different disciplines to target on more substantial projects synergistically,
- obtain and effectively manage funds to support the research endeavour of the Science Faculty, and
- recognize the importance of research excellence in teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
I have been very active in research. My research concentrates on the application of molecular biological technology in the studies of basic and applied biological problems. For all my years in CUHK, I have been the major source of molecular technology in the Biology Department, the Science Faculty and CUHK as a whole. Since 1993, the Biology Department has placed great emphasis in molecular biology and biotechnology leading to our success in being identified as an area of excellence in “Plant and Fungal Biotechnology”. I cannot over-emphasize that I have been contributing to the development of CUHK in this direction persistently and consistently for a long time. I have applied, as principal investigator, for RGC Cooperate Research Fund for equipment to set up the Centre for Single Cell Genome Sequencing.

Special contributions:
- I have introduced the use of posters as an important student learning activity and continuous assessment in the course of BIOL2310 General and Molecular Genetics. This form of teaching activity has been adopted by other courses in Biology.
- I have organized a blog for teaching of the course FNSC4180 Food Microbiology in the past 4 years. All the important teaching materials, up-to-date information on food safety issues, etc can be effectively related to the students. This blog has been active even after the semester was over for the students to follow up on special foodborne disease cases such as the very important foodborne pathogen Escherichia coli outbreak in Germany. Daily information on the development of the outbreak is provided on the blog and the students can learn first-hand real-life outbreak investigation when they read the information on the blog. The links: http://fns4180hsk.blogspot.hk/. Blogs are also constructed for several courses of mine, including LSCI5000-1, LSCI5004, BIOL1005, and FNSC5110.
I have been teaching enthusiastically for my whole career here in CUHK. I have introduced several teaching and assessment practices to the courses in Biology and Food and Nutritional Sciences. In my courses, I like to introduce the most recent concepts and information to the students. For undergraduate courses, I have established web-based learning, poster presentation, oral presentation, and knowledge about science in the real world. For project students, I have asked them to start real research as early as possible. I believe that to learn to practice science, students need to have hands-on experience early in their career. It is just like when we train a basketball player, we would want the player to play basketball early on rather than just learning all the regulations of basketball, reading about the game, understanding the theory behind the skills, and memorizing the stories of the great players. All these are important but one cannot become a great player by just doing these, one needs to practice and play real games. Over the years, I consider myself very fortunate and successful in training both undergraduate and postgraduate students to be good scientists. I graduated over 30 Master of Philosophy students, 15 PhD students, and numerous Master of Science and undergraduate project students. Most of the MPhil and PhD graduates from my laboratory excelled in science. Several have become faculty members or research scientists in very good universities or biotechnology companies. I have been very successful in obtaining research grants to support the research activities of the postgraduate and project students, and teaching grants, to support my developing and establishing new teaching pedagogical methods in the classes. All these have contributed to a very rewarding teaching portfolio in my professorial career in CUHK.
